Making Responsible Decisions An Interpretive Ethic for Genetic Decisionmaking.Mary Terrell White - 1999 - Hastings Center Report 29 (1):14-21.
It is widely thought that genetic counselors should work with parents “nondirectively”: they should keep parents informed and support their decisions. But this view misconceives human decisionmaking by failing to recognize that value choices are constructed within and constrained by a community. Acknowledging that decisions involve interaction with and responsibility toward others leads to a “dialogical” model of counseling, in which genetic counselors may question and guide parents’ decisions.

Guidelines for IRB Review of International Collaborative Medical Research: A Proposal.Mary Terrell White - 1999 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 27 (1):87-94.
The increase in the scope of international collaborative medical research involving human subjects is raising the problem of whether and how to maintain Western ethical standards when research is conducted in countries with very different social and ethical values. Existing international ethical guidelines for research largely reflect Western concepts of human rights, focusing on the bioethical principles of respect for persons, beneficence, and justice. However, in countries and societies where these values are understood differently or are not expressed in local (...)

Decision-making through dialogue: Reconfiguring autonomy in genetic counseling. [REVIEW]Mary Terrell White - 1998 - Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics 19 (1):5-19.
Nondirective genetic counseling developed as a means of promoting informed and independent decision-making. To the extent that it minimizes risks of coercion, this counseling approach effectively respects client autonomy. However, it also permits clients to make partially informed, poorly reasoned or ethically questionable choices, and denies counselors a means of demonstrating accountability for the use of their services. These practical and ethical tensions result from an excessive focus on noncoercion while neglecting the contribution of adequate information and deliberative competence to (...)

Analyse comparée de deux stratégies de développement du leadership authentique dans une perspective de développement durable.Anne-Marie Corriveau & Joanne Roch - 2021 - Revue Phronesis 10 (4):38-59.
The implementation of sustainable development goals forces the leaders of organizations to develop cognitive and behavioural capacities to manage the resulting complexity. These abilities can be associated with authentic leadership. Reflective approaches are recognized as showing promise for developing this type of leadership. However, they are rarely used in the context of university training. This article compares two learning approaches that target leadership development in master’s level students. It emerges that experiential learning through collaborative action games would help to develop (...)

  15. Enthusiastic Improvement: Mary Astell and Damaris Masham on Sociability.Joanne E. Myers - 2013 - Hypatia 28 (3):533-550.
Many commentators have contrasted the way that sociability is theorized in the writings of Mary Astell and Damaris Masham, emphasizing the extent to which Masham is more interested in embodied, worldly existence. I argue, by contrast, that Astell's own interest in imagining a constitutively relational individual emerges once we pay attention to her use of religious texts and tropes. To explore the relevance of Astell's Christianity, I emphasize both how Astell's Christianity shapes her view of the individual's relation to society (...)

    “Mere Auxiliaries to the Movement” 1 : How Intellectual Biography Obscures Marx's and Engels's Gendered Political Partnerships.Terrell Carver - 2018 - Hypatia 33 (4):593-609.
Four women have been conventionally framed as wives and/or mistresses and/or sexual partners in the biographical reception of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels as heterosexual men. These women were Jenny Marx, Helene Demuth, Mary Burns, and Lydia Burns. How exactly they appear in the few contemporary texts and rare images that survive is less interesting than the determination of subsequent biographers of the two “great men” to make these women fit a familiar genre, namely intellectual biography. An analysis of Marx–Engels (...)

A Feeling for the Human Subject: Margaret Lasker and the Genetic Puzzle of Pentosuria.Nurit Kirsh & L. Joanne Green - 2021 - Journal of the History of Biology 54 (2):247-274.
In 1933 Margaret Lasker, a biochemist who worked at the labs of Montefiore Hospital in New York, developed an accurate method for the differentiation between pentosuria and diabetes. Research into pentosuria, and mostly its genetic aspects, became Lasker’s lifelong passion. Since research was not part of her job description, she conducted the chief part of her study in her home kitchen. Lasker’s extensive and personal correspondence with her patients and their families may be the secret key for her success in (...)

In chapter 7 of her 2008 book, Lose Your Mother: A Journey Along the Atlantic Slave Route, Saidiya Hartman writes, “I too am trying to save the girl, not from death or sickness or a tyrant but from oblivion. [...] These words are the only defense of her existence, the only barrier against her disappearance”. Hartman’s project in Lose Your Mother is a search for a life beyond the archive; it is a search for a living narrative, written on, in, (...)

How Organizations can Develop Solidarity in the Workplace? A Case Study.Marie-Noëlle Albert, Nadia Lazzari Dodeler & Asri Yves Ohin - 2022 - Humanistic Management Journal 7 (2):327-346.
The concept of community of persons, which focuses on both persons and the whole, helps understand solidarity. The latter is based on the social nature of persons. Community of persons and solidarity seems to be able to move away from the individualist perspective or the individualism-collectivism dichotomy. Using autopraxeography in a pragmatic constructivism epistemological paradigm, this article aims to explore how organizations can develop solidarity in a workplace. The experience presented takes place in a bank. It shows that communities of (...)

The construction and legitimation of workplace bullying in the public sector: insight into power dynamics and organisational failures in health and social care.Marie Hutchinson & Debra Jackson - 2015 - Nursing Inquiry 22 (1):13-26.
Health‐care and public sector institutions are high‐risk settings for workplace bullying. Despite growing acknowledgement of the scale and consequence of this pervasive problem, there has been little critical examination of the institutional power dynamics that enable bullying. In the aftermath of large‐scale failures in care standards in public sector healthcare institutions, which were characterised by managerial bullying, attention to the nexus between bullying, power and institutional failures is warranted. In this study, employing Foucault's framework of power, we illuminate bullying as (...)
